West Central Alabama Area Health Education Center is the recipient organization of the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program(RCORP) Implementation II—a multi-year initiative that addresses barriers to treatment for substance use disorder (SUD), including opioid use disorder (OUD). The program works toward the Health and Human Services’ goal of ending the opioid epidemic. RCORP is supported through HRSA’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. RCORP II serves the counties of Choctaw, Clarke, Escambia, Marengo, Monroe and Sumter.

2020 S.A.O.R. Project Activities

Community Needs Assessment

In the fall of 2020, 85 healthcare providers and 95 community members across our six-county service area were anonymously asked about current substance use disorder/ opioid use disorder needs in their community. The following summarizes some of the results:

  • 67% of providers and 45% of community members surveyed agree that there is a shortage of lack of availability of physicians who are willing to diagnose substance use disorder.

  • 77% of providers and 56% of community members surveyed agree that there is a shortage of lack of availability of certified alcohol and drug counselors.

  • 73% of providers and 53% of community members surveyed agree that there is a shortage of lack of availability of mental health providers.

  • 75% of providers and 45% of community members surveyed agree that there is a shortage of lack of availability of peer support or community programs for persons recovering from substance use disorders after treatment.

  • 56% of community members in the six-county target area agreed that education of substance use disorder is needed.

  • 37% of providers and 43% of community members surveyed agree that the community would very probably or definitely benefit from safe use sites.

  • 36% of providers and 46% of community members surveyed agree that the community would very probably or definitely benefit from access to a needle exchange program.

March 2023 - Strengthening Families Program where RCORP II provided medication lock boxes for program participants. Organization attendees and speakers included West Central Alabama AHEC, The Health & Wellness Education Center, Officer William Shelton, Chief Josette White, and Sumter County Community Health Workers.

April 2023 - Community Health Workers provided SUD/OUD Education and resources at the Community Health and Wellness Fair.

Sumter County

April 2023 - Community Health Worker was front and center as U.S. Rep Terri Sewell spoke with Sumter county residents during her Congress in your Community tour.

Marengo County

April 2023 - Community Health Workers provided education during community sunrise services on Vaping, Mental Health, Heart Health, Diabetes and Hypertension.

Choctaw County

April 2023 - Vaping Information Session and medication lock box distribution at local church. Operation Save Teens presented to the group.

Escambia/Conecuh County

April 2023 -CHWs participated in National Drug Takeback Day in a event for Escambia and Conecuh Counites. Collaborated with Project FREEDOM, People Engaged in Recovery, Drug Council, Inc. and Town of Castleberry Police Department.

Fentanyl Facts and Overdose Risk: A FREE DEA Educational Foundation Course

Fentanyl Facts and Increased Overdose Risk. This course was developed by the Addiction Policy Forum in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Educational Foundation and JCOIN to share facts about fentanyl in the U.S., increasing overdose risk, and resources for communities. The course takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
