Working on the front lines of the opioid crisis, we are want to ensure that law enforcement and first responders are equipped with information so they can better assess risks and apply the safest strategies for taking care of themselves and the individuals they are called to serve.

Free Courses

These courses are made available by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA).

  • Service to Self Training

    This free online training course informs fire and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel about their increased risk of experiencing mental health and substance use issues and conditions. It also equips them with information and resources to address these issues in themselves or their peers.

  • First Response Training

    This 1-hour online training course was developed in response to the impact of the opioid crisis on first responders across the country. It addresses the mental and physical stressors faced by firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, and police when responding to opioid overdose calls and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE). This course also provides evidence-based coping strategies, resources, and exercises to help mitigate the impacts of these stressful events.

  • Creating Safe Scenes

    This 1.5 hour, CAPCE accredited, online course helps first responders assist individuals in crisis with mental illness or substance use disorder using safe, positive approaches. It helps first responders understand more about mental health, mental illness, and substance use disorders so they can better assess risks and apply the safest strategies for taking care of themselves and the individuals they are called to serve.

  • Shield of Resilience
    This 1-hour online course provides law enforcement officers with a foundational skill set to better understand and address the behavioral health stressors that are unique to law enforcement. It helps law enforcement officers learn to recognize signs and symptoms of stress, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal thoughts and actions.

Individual and Family Encounter Training Video

This 13-minute training video teaches crisis counselors how to perform an individual and family crisis counseling encounter. It utilizes role play to highlight crisis counseling skills and ways to interact with survivors. Although the video was developed for Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program staff, it may be useful to anyone providing crisis counseling to disaster-affected individuals and families.
